What Christmas Means To Me
Christmas is a very special time for me and my family. Even though I am now thirty-years-old I still get every bit as excited as I did as a kid. For me the entire month of December is a big deal. I love the shopping, the decorations, the wrapping, the baking, and all of the Christmas movies on TV.
My earliest Christmas memory is from when I was five-years-old. It was the first time I remember getting really excited about the season and all of the things that go with it. I remember waking on Christmas morning and coming down stairs to find a huge present, around the same height as me, wrapped in brightly coloured wrapping paper. When I opened it I saw that it was a Barbie dream house. My dad had sat up the night before assembling it and my mum had set the dinning table up with all the little knives and forks and glasses and dinner plates. She had also arranged my new Barbie dolls inside as though they were sitting down to their very own Christmas dinner.

Hi there: You got that fantastic Barbie Dream House when you were 5; I would have LOVED that. Christmas 1977: What I wanted: The Bionic Woman Hair Salon. What I got: The Six-million-dollar man rocket lab. I would have loved to come play with that Dream House. Was it the one with the 'elevator' in it?

It did have an elevator but my brother stuck something in it that we couldn't get out so that it stopped working. There were four floors, with the top one being a roof garden that had a little washing wine on it lol. There were times when my brother and I made it in to the head quarters for all of his transformers. I used to love playing with his he-man toys too because I wasn't allowed any of my own. Stupid gender stereotypes.
DeleteAw, what a great Christmas memory! Barbie's Dream House! I would have loved that too, though I probably would have converted it into a stable for the Breyer horses! :-)
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of my little ponies and they had their own stable next to the dream house, though it was one I made out of a cardboard box lol. Barbie rode around on them but her legs touched the floor because she was too tall.
DeleteYou got the Barbie Dream House (which I still kinda want to this day)!

I know, I'd love to play with it again if I still had it. I have two nephews so I play a lot of boy games, which can be fun, but I would like to play Barbies again.
DeleteBarbie Dream House, I was too old for toys when all the Barbie stuff came out and neither of my daughters cared much for dolls of any kind. I now have 3 grandsons so no Barbie purchases for me.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame. I have two nephews that only want me to play games involving smashing things up.
DeleteA Barbie dream house. My first present that I really remember clearly was a Tiny Tears doll I was so happy I cried.

I had a tiny tears too. I think my one also wet herself which got messy. She came with a potty and a bottle. I also got the boy version
DeleteBarbie townhouse. My niece just got one last year & hers is definitely a lot better than the one I got when I was 5. :) Thanks for the giveaway!

I'm jealous. I have nephews and they make me play games that involve me holding pillows up while they punch it. I get bruised a lot :)
DeleteI am pretty sure I got a bike...a pretty pink one with streamers coming off the handle bars and a pink basket in the front :o)
ReplyDeleteoops...email is cairbair@gmail.com
DeleteI got a bike like that one year but refused to let my dad teach me how to ride it. I think I had trust issues lol
DeleteLoved the memory and I love your books, count me in!

Thanks Emily :)
DeleteGreat post! Loving the cover of your book! Looks so good! You got a barbie dream house. I got one when i was about 7 i think. Loved it! lol Thank you for sharing! Happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteshadowluvs2read(at)gmail(dot)com
7 is probably a better age to appreciate it. I think my mum loved it more than me. She used to tidy everything up after I had gone to bed.
DeleteHappy holidays to you too :)
